This refers to inflammation within the eye ball. It can involve the anterior portion of the eye(iritis, iridocyclitis or anterior uveitis), the middle portion of the eye(vitritis, intermediate uveitis or pars planitis) or the back portion of the eye(retinitis, retino-choroiditis or choroiditis or posterior uveitis) or the optic nerve, which carries visual information from the eye to the brain(optic neuritis). In many cases, the exact cause cannot be determined. Treatment consists of systemic steroids. Recent advances in ocular disease management enable us to give steroid injections around the eye or even within the eye itself. This has the advantage of avoiding bodily complications of systemic(tablets or intravenous injections) steroids
Uveitis can lead to other complications such as cataract, glaucoma and retinopathy or retinal detachment
